break out screener setting for Tradingview

To catch a breakout into a new upward trend after a sideways (consolidation) phase using TradingView’s Screener, set up filters that identify low volatility followed by a sudden increase in volume and price momentum.

Key TradingView Screener Filters

  1. Volume Profile (The Catalyst)

    • Relative Volume (RVOL): Above 1.5 or 2 (Ensures institutional buying interest is entering relative to recent average volume).

    • Volume: Above 500k or 1M (Ensures liquidity for execution).

  2. Price Action & Trend Transition

    • Change %: Above 2% to 4% (Catches the initial upward breakout candle).

    • Exponential Moving Average (20): Below Last Price (Confirms price is trading above the short-term trend line).

  3. Volatile Expansion / Squeeze Release (Identifying the Breakout)

    • Bollinger Bands %B: Crossing 0.8 or 1 upwards (Indicates price is breaking out of the upper volatility band after a period of contraction).

    • Average Directional Index (ADX 14): Between 15 and 25 (Low ADX confirms it was in a tight range, but starting to trend).

Step-by-Step Setup in TradingView

  1. Open TradingView and open the Stock / Crypto / Forex Screener tab at the bottom.

  2. Click Filters at the top right to clear existing settings.

  3. Search and apply the following parameters:

    • Exchange / Region: Select your preferred market (e.g., US, Malaysia, Crypto).

    • Relative Volume: Above 1.5

    • Change %: Above 3%

    • Bollinger Bands %B (20, 2): Above 0.8

    • 20-Day EMA: Below Last

  4. Save the custom preset as "Sideways Breakout" for quick access.

Pro Tip: Sort the results list by Relative Volume or Change % to immediately highlight the stocks breaking out of their consolidation ranges with the highest buying momentum.
